“Cricket scholarship” means something quite specific in British independent education. It is not a free place, and it is not awarded on talent alone: schools are looking for a player who will strengthen their first XI and settle into boarding life academically as well as on the field. What a UK cricket scholarship really is
Most awards are a percentage reduction on tuition, granted for the length of a stage — for example from Year 9 to the end of GCSEs, reviewed before Sixth Form. Alongside the money, scholars usually receive extra coaching time, strength and conditioning support and priority in the fixture programme. For many families the coaching access matters more than the discount.
